Chapter Seven: AristotleAristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher. Along with Plato, he is often considered to be one of the two most influential philosophers in Western thought. Together they transformed Presocratic Greek philosophy into the foundations of Western philosophy as we know it.
Aristotle was a pupil of Plato in Athens and tutor of Alexander the Great, who was then 13. He opened his own school of philosophy in 335 BC which became to be known as the Lyceum. Here he composed most of his writings.
Aristotle can be classed as an empiricist as he placed much value on knowledge gained from the senses. He is known for being one of the few figures in history who studied almost every subject possible at the time. In science, Aristotle studied anatomy, astronomy, embryology, geography, geology, meteorology, physics, and zoology. In philosophy, Aristotle wrote on aesthetics, economics, ethics, government, metaphysics, politics, psychology, rhetoric and theology. He also dealt with education, foreign customs, literature and poetry.
Metaphysics is regarded by Aristotle as the study of One Substance (and its properties) which exists and causes all things, and is therefore the necessary foundation for all human knowledge. Substance he declared to be what primarily existed. The Physics and connected works contain discussion and analysis of such concepts as nature, change, chance, time, place, continuity, infinity, growth; proofs that movement is eternal and that there is an eternal Prime Mover; and much doctrine as to the actual constitution and workings of the universe. ... (see book for more)
The first philosophy (Metaphysics) is universal and is exclusively concerned with primary substance. ... And here we will have the science to study that which is just as that which is, both in its essence and in the properties which, just as a thing that is, it has. (Aristotle, Metaphysics)
.. by nature man is a political animal. Hence men have a desire for life together, even when they have no need to seek each other’s help. Nevertheless, common interest too is a factor in bringing them together, in so far as it contributes to the good life of each. … Certainly most men, in their desire to keep alive, are prepared to face a great deal of suffering, as if finding in life itself a certain well-being and a natural sweetness. (Aristotle, Politics)
