Chapter
Nineteen: George BerkeleyGeorge Berkeley was born in Dysert Castle, near
Thomastown, Ireland, the eldest son of William Berkeley, a cadet of the noble
family of Berkeley. He was educated at Kilkenny College and attended Trinity
College, Dublin completing a masters degree in 1707. Known as Bishop Berkeley,
he was an influential Irish philosopher whose primary philosophical achievement
is the advancement of what has come to be called subjective idealism, summed
up in his dictum, "Esse est percipi" ("To be is to be perceived").
Basically, the theory is that there is no such thing as matter, only mental
events and minds to perceive them.
Berkeley's theorizing was Empiricism at its most extreme, as he believed that
this was the only path to certainty (he disliked atheism, skepticism and abstractions
masquerading as real things). Berkeley theorized that the objects we perceive
exist precisely as they appear to the senses. Objective knowledge is possible
because the perceived object is the only object that exists. There is no "real" object
(no matter) "behind" the object as we perceive it, which "causes" our
perceptions. All that exists is our perception of objects, and this is the
real object. ... (see book for more)
Upon the whole, I am inclined to think that the far greater part, if not all, of those difficulties which have hitherto amused philosophers, and blocked up the way to knowledge, are entirely owing to ourselves. That we have first raised a dust, and then complain we cannot see. … My purpose therefore is, to try if I can discover what those principles are, which have introduced all that doubtfulness and uncertainty, those absurdities and contradictions into the several sects of philosophy; insomuch that the wisest men have thought our ignorance incurable, conceiving it to arise from the natural dullness and limitation of our faculties.
Nothing seems of more importance, towards erecting a firm system of sound and real knowledge, which may be proof against the assaults of scepticism, than to lay the beginning in a distinct explication of what is meant by thing, reality, existence: for in vain shall we dispute concerning the real existence of things, or pretend to any knowledge thereof, so long as we have not fixed the meaning of those words.
We are under an invincible blindness as to the true and real nature of things. ... Hence a great number of dark and ambiguous terms presumed to stand for abstract notions, have been introduced into metaphysics and morality, and from these have grown infinite distractions and disputes amongst the learned.
Everything we see, hear, feel, or any way perceive by sense, being a sign or effect of the power of God; as is our perception of those very motions. (George Berkeley)
