Chapter
Four: HeraclitusHeraclitus was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher from Ephesus
in Asia Minor. As with other pre-Socratics, his writings only survive in fragments
quoted by other authors. He disagreed with Thales, Anaximander, and Pythagoras
about the nature of the ultimate substance and claimed instead that everything
is derived from fire, rather than from air, water, or earth. This led to the
belief that change is real, and stability illusory.
Heraclitus’ central idea is the dynamic unity of reality, 'All is Becoming',
'All is Opposites'. This understanding is similar to the teachings of Buddha
(who lived around the same time). For Heraclitus everything is in flux. The
idea of the Logos (that the universe is a unity in constant change and that
there is an underlying order or reason to this change, due to this unity and
interconnection of all things) is also credited to Heraclitus. ... (see book

I see nothing but Becoming. Be not deceived! It is the fault of your limited outlook and not the fault of the essence of things if you believe that you see firm land anywhere in the ocean of Becoming and Passing. You need names for things, just as if they had a rigid permanence, but the very river in which you bathe a second time is no longer the same one which you entered before.
Listening to the Logos rather than to me, it is wise to agree that all things are in reality one thing and one thing only. (quoted in Hippolytus, Refutation, Heraclitus)
