It is interesting that 'bestiality' (19,000, rank 130) gets more searches for the incorrect spelling of the word 'beastiality' (45,000, rank 30). We assume it relates to animals being beasts, or perhaps copulating with animals is seen as 'beastly' behaviour. Either way (as the results below show), sex with animals gets a large number of searches (top 20) - particularly when compared with subjects like philosophy (1,000) and physics (2,000).

Given that sex has multiple functions (bonding, evolution of immune system, hormone stimulation, ..), combined with such a large interest as shown by the search results - the conclusion is that we probably have evolved having sexual relations with animals. While there may be outrage at this thought, the important thing is to understand the truth about our evolution, such that we can better understand our instincts and how to best regulate them in socially acceptable ways (where morality is enlightened from true foundations).

Some other ideas to consider / find more information:

It would be interesting to look at the genetic structures of some common life forms / diseases that humans share with animals (and which are sexually transmitted), to see if there is evidence of the organism co-evolving in both species.

Horse (20,000, rank 130) and dog sex (17,000, rank 150), are the most popular animals searched. It is interesting that humans have evolved closely with these animals for many years and we generally hold them in high esteem. eg. 'man's best friend'.

Studies of children growing up on farms and incidence of bestiality.

Statistics of frequency of behaviour, domestic / types of animals.

Can animals give consent? The studies of Peter Singer, Australian philosopher, on the morality of sex with animals.

From the essay: 'Not so long ago, any form of sexuality not leading to the conception of children was seen as, at best, wanton lust, or worse, a perversion. One by one, the taboos have fallen. ... But not every taboo has crumbled. Heard anyone chatting at parties lately about how good it is having sex with their dog? Probably not. Sex with animals is still definitely taboo.
If Midas Dekkers, author of Dearest Pet, has got it right, this is not because of its rarity. Dekkers, a Dutch biologist and popular naturalist, has assembled a substantial body of evidence to show that humans have often thought of "love for animals" in ways that go beyond a pat and a hug, or a proper concern for the welfare of members of other species. His book has a wide range of illustrations from different periods of human history.

How much of this is fantasy, the King Kong-ish archetypes of an earlier age? In the 1940s, Kinsey asked twenty thousand Americans about their sexual behavior, and found that 8 percent of males and 3.5 percent of females stated that they had, at some time, had a sexual encounter with an animal. Among men living in rural areas, the figure shot up to 50 percent. Based on twentieth-century court records in Austria where bestiality was regularly prosecuted, rural men are most likely to have vaginal intercourse with cows and calves, less frequently with mares, foals and goats and only rarely with sheep or pigs.

Women having sex with bulls or rams, on the other hand, seems to be more a matter of myth than reality. For three-quarters of the women who told Kinsey that they had had sexual contact with an animal, the animal involved was a dog, and actual sexual intercourse was rare. More commonly the woman limited themselves to touching and masturbating the animal, or having their genitals licked by it.

Sex with animals does not always involve cruelty. Who has not been at a social occasion disrupted by the household dog gripping the legs of a visitor and vigorously rubbing its penis against them? The host usually discourages such activities, but in private not everyone objects to being used by her or his dog in this way, and occasionally mutually satisfying activities may develop.'

A contemporary look at sex between humans and animals 'Understanding Bestiality & Zoophilia' - A Book Review

From the essay: 'Understanding Bestiality & Zoophilia' by Hani Miletski, is the best overall survey of bestiality that I have read. It is based on a doctoral dissertation at the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, and is one of the few dissertations from that institution to be published.
Using a wide range of secondary sources dealing with the history of sexuality, Miletski examines animal and human sexual contacts area by area, from prehistoric times to the most recent.

From surveying the widespread existence of animal-human contact, Miletski then turns to surveying the explanations for such conduct offered by earlier investigators ranging from Krafft-Ebing (1935), Freud (1963), and Menninger (1951), to Kinsey (Kinsey, Pomeroy, & Martin, 1948; Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin, & Gebhard, 1953) and his associates (Gebhard, Gagnon, Pomeroy, & Christensen, 1965), to John Money (1986).

It seems clear from Miletski's summary of the existing literature that very little is actually known about bestiality and there is not anything approaching a consensus as to why animal-human sexual contacts occur. Research on the topic, while out of the mainstream of sexuality research, has been further complicated by the growing groups of animal rights advocates who wonder whether animals can consent or whether animal-human sexual contact is harmful to animals, which drives potential respondents further underground. Miletski simply reports the conflicting views of the various positions on this issue and does not take sides.'
