Child & Adolescent (Teen) Sexual Health, Behaviour & Development
Latest Research, Information on Child Genital Touching, Puberty in Girls and Boys, Teaching Sex Education in Schools, Teen Peer Pressure, Statistics and Related Issues

Hello. Thanks for visiting our evolutionary philosophy of human sexuality pages. We are currently researching good quality sites relating to our biological and cultural sexual evolution - as a way of collecting and presenting the most important / latest knowledge and research.

Below you will find summaries of articles & websites on Child and Adolescent Sexual Health i.e. latest research on baby, child & teen sexuality, anatomy, behavior & genital play, development, psychology, puberty, sex education through schools, family & friends, information as protection, religion and culture vs evolution, raising children with truthful, positive attitudes about their sexuality etc.

Child and adolescence sexuality are recognised stages in human sexuality. What is 'age appropriate' behaviour though, is a source of debate in modern society. It is quite controversial to recognise and discuss sexual behaviour of these age groups.

The following internet search results shows a remarkable interest in 'teens' (30,000 /day, ranked in top 70) which suggests that men find teenage girls attractive and are searching for stimulation. The results also show that people are motivated by pragmatic concerns such as child support (20,000, top 100) and child care (14,000, top 200) - and that interest in sex education (4,000) is considerably low.

From an evolutionary perspective it is interesting to consider the truth of our biological sexual evolution (e.g. our evolved instincts for beauty) which are at times in conflict with our cultural laws and society. While we respect the laws of society and realise we should not follow evolution blindly, we can acknowledge and regulate our instincts - creating a sexual morality founded upon truth rather than cultural / religious myth and custom.

Definition of Adolescence & Puberty

Adolescence (from Latin adolescere: to grow up) is the period of life between puberty and adulthood. It is a process of psychological, social and biological maturation which leads to becoming an adult. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines adolescence as the period of life between 10 and 19 years of age.

Puberty in contrast, is a process of physical maturatity which involves the secondary sexual characteristics and leads to fertility. Physical changes include a deeper voice in boys, breast development in girls, menstrual periods, growth of pubic hair and facial hair.

Sexual Behaviour / Development of Infants & Children

An informative academic essay on child sexuality. Discussion of ideas such as breastfeeding, physical contact between mother and child, intimacy & emotional maturity, child genital exploration & masturbation, sexual fantasy, interaction with peers, inhibiting sexual experiences of infants & children and how mainstream society views child sexuality.
From the essay: 'The question for any society is: Is there such a thing as age appropriate sexual behavior for children? There is no agreement on the answer to that question in America. In fact, rational discussion of age appropriate sexual behavior and development have scarcely begun.'

Antisexuality & Child Sexual Abuse

From the essay: 'Our current sexual abuse system promotes an antisexual view of human sexuality. This is seen in the depiction of sex as bad in sexual abuse prevention programs, the readiness to define a sexual or affectionate interaction as abusive, the criminalization of childhood sexual behavior, and the genitalization of human sexuality. The consequences of this are likely to be negative for children, adults, and the society.

Antisexuality is evident in the need to deny and ignore the sexuality of children. The oft-repeated but unfounded dogmas that children cannot talk about anything they have not experienced and that age inappropriate sexual behavior means the child must have been sexually abused are counter to the research concerning children's sexuality.'

The Realities of Day Care - National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study

From the website: "The NICHD Study of Early Child Care found that using child care does not affect infants' trust in their mothers. .. Day care has different effects upon the mother - child relationship depending upon the nature of the mother's behavior toward her child at home. When mothers provide sensitive, responsive, affectionate care, then the attachment between mother and child, which is already likely to be secure, is not typically hurt by day care."

Essay & Statistics on Adolescent Sexual Behaviour, Pregnancy, STD's

From the essay: "For several decades, concerns have been mounting in the United States about adolescent sexual behavior, pregnancy, and parenthood. These concerns have been intensified by several realizations.
... Rates of adolescent births in the United States are much higher than in other industrialized societies. The rate of adolescent childbearing in the U.S. since the mid 1980's has increased. Teen parenting outside of marriage has been increasing for several decades and at a very rapid pace. The majority of adolescents do not want to become parents this soon. Sexually active adolescents have extremely high rates of sexually transmitted infections and are at risk of exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Initial sexual experiences are often coercive."

Adolescence, Identity & Types of Peer Pressure

From the website: 'The more comfortable a teen is with their identity, the less susceptible they will be to negative peer pressure.

Even little kids worry about making friends and being liked. But during adolescence, these fears intensify. Adolescence brings with it awkwardness and uncertainty, as teens find their bodies, interests and priorities all changing. Belonging to a group of friends affirms their self-worth and supports them as they negotiate the rocky path toward adulthood. As they distance themselves from their parents, they increasingly use their friends as their primary confidants and rely upon their advice and support.'

Quotes on Child Sexuality, Behaviour & Development

Popular opinion has quite definite ideas about the nature and characteristics of the sexual instinct. It is generally understood to be absent in childhood ... (Sigmund Freud)Popular opinion has quite definite ideas about the nature and characteristics of the sexual instinct. It is generally understood to be absent in childhood, to set in at the time of puberty and to be revealed in the manifestation of an irresistible attraction exercised by one sex upon the other, while its aim is presumed to be sexual union. We have every reason to believe, however, that these views give a very false picture of the true situation. (Sigmund Freud, Three Essays of the Theory of Sexuality)

To the boys the urinary function seems like a game, with the charm of all games that offer liberty of action; the penis can be manipulated, it gives opportunity for action, which is one of the deep interests of the child. (Simone de Beauvoir)To the boys the urinary function seems like a game, with the charm of all games that offer liberty of action; the penis can be manipulated, it gives opportunity for action, which is one of the deep interests of the child. ... Anatomically the penis is well suited for this role; projecting free from the body, it seems like a natural little plaything, a kind of puppet. (Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 1949)

Babies and children are sexual creatures and it is only in a sexually repressed culture such as ours that credence would be given to any alternative suggestion. In the vast majority of cultures in the world, children witness adult sexuality as part of their everyday life experience. Things are different in the West where children are required to be 'innocent' and seen as empty slates. .. If it could be proven that by allowing children to gain knowledge of sexuality naturally as they grow up that we would be harming or damaging them in any way, we would of course, be against it - but there is no proof. On the contrary, work done by Margaret Mead and others suggests in societies where children are not repressed sexually, they show no preoccupation with sex and grow up sexually balanced. In such cultures, perversions and deviations are rare. (Dr Philip Cauthery, Dr Andrew and Penny Stanway, The Complete Book of Love and Sex, 1989)

Quotes from Philosopher Peter Vardy on Sex Education

The Puzzle of Sex is a wonderful book by the philosopher, Peter Vardy. He explores theological reflections about sex (Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament) and suggests that the time has come for a reapprisal of traditional views on sexual ethics. Vardy also values the mystery and depth of human sexuality. He writes on the importance of educating your children to the truth and beauty about sex (of both body and mind) in a loving environment.

The example of a loving, committed and sexually relaxed mother and father will be the best way of communicating this subjective knowledge. By contrast, a child who has been sexually abused by a parent or who sees parents who are manipulative or who ‘use’ each other will find it very difficult to reach an understanding of the true meaning of human sexuality. (Vardy. 1997)

Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation.Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established; the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable. ... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice, his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a complicated civilisation.
