When the mind's eye rests on objects illuminated
by truth and reality, it understands and
comprehends them, and functions intelligently; but when it
turns to the twilight world of change and decay, it can only form opinions,
its vision is confused and its beliefs shifting, and it seems to lack intelligence.
... Truthfulness. He will never willingly tolerate an untruth, but will hate
it as much as he loves truth. ... And is there anything more closely connected
with wisdom than truth?
(Plato, 380 BC)
What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult. (Sigmund Freud)
Hello Everyone,
As a science philosopher I thought it would be interesting to do some IQ tests
(the mind is a very interesting thing), which then led me to creating this
webpage
with links to reputable, free, online IQ tests (use Anchor Links or scroll
to IQ tests below).
It is obvious that IQ / Intelligence is partly genetic and partly cultural
(practice / education). I know that I come from a genetically smart family
(due to test results of my siblings - see my Biography)
and I was curious as to how ten years study of Physics,
Philosophy, Metaphysics) affected my intellectual ability (for good or
bad!! - my IQ Scores for the IQ Tests are shown next to the IQ Test links below).
According to these results I would be classified as 'gifted'. However, acting
intelligently is not just about being a gifted 'genius' (an abused term!),
but, as Plato wrote, requires knowledge of truth and reality (philosophy physics
metaphysics) if we are to act intelligently and wisely. (And evolution has
not equipped us well for this task, we tend to be deceived by our imagination,
and we sense the world around us as being made of separate and discrete objects
when reason clearly tells us things
are interconnected).
Anyway, this page has a good collection of free online IQ tests.
Hope you have some fun doing them. And I also hope that you will look
around you sometimes and think about what everything is (including yourself),
how
it is all connected together in Space. There is now a simple explanation, you
just need to read and think about it!
All the best,
Geoff Haselhurst
PS - I checked the links to IQ tests (below) in May 2006 and they were all working. Please write to us if there are any problems. Thanks.
Somebody
who only reads newspapers and at best books of contemporary authors looks to
me like an extremely near-sighted person who scorns eyeglasses. He is completely
dependent on the prejudices and fashions of his times, since he never gets
to see or hear anything else. And what a person thinks on his own without being
stimulated by the thoughts and experiences of other people is even in the best
case rather paltry and monotonous. There are only a few enlightened people
with a lucid mind and style and with good taste within a century. What has
been preserved of their work belongs among the most precious possessions of
mankind. We owe it to a few writers of antiquity (Plato, Aristotle, etc.) that
the people in the Middle Ages could slowly extricate themselves from the superstitions
and ignorance that had darkened life for more than half a millennium. Nothing
is more needed to overcome the modernist's snobbishness. (Albert Einstein, 1954)
Having read many great philosophers over the past ten years (see Bibliography)
I feel that I am reasonably well qualified to comment on some common characteristics
of 'creative genius'.
i) They tend to live fairly isolated lives such that they have a great deal
of time to think, and they are not so indoctrinated with the beliefs of their
time, thus they are more likely to create / discover new knowledge.
ii) They tend to be very stubborn and believe that they are right, but this
stubbornness is founded on a passion for Reason and Truth.
iii) They believe that things can be understood and explained by Science and
Reason. That reason is founded on Principles and their logical deductions which
are True if they correspond with our Senses. (Thus opinion plays no part!)
iv) They tend to be both curious and very good at understanding how things
work. Often philosophers were also inventors.
v) They tend to be non-specialists with a diversity of knowledge (very different
to modern education!)

http://www.highiqsociety.org/iq_tests/ The International High IQ Society offer five free IQ tests online (and logic puzzles). Adults who score more than 126 may join the society (for a fee of about $50.00 US). I scored 160 on their standard test (12 minutes, 50 questions - so you have to answer quickly!)
http://www.iqtest.com/ - You have thirteen minutes to complete 38 questions. I scored 165 (so the test is fairly easy I think!) You have to pay for complete results.

We received a nice letter from the vegas society recently (Oct. 2007) so we
thought we would add their link here. They have a nice collection of
IQ tests, and their ideals of creativity are important.
From their site: Advanced Vega Society is a worldwide intellectual
society, founded in August 2006. Our members are from different backgrounds
and religions,

motto is "Great minds, noble goals".

This means you are highly intelligent and have picked up an impressive and unique collection of facts and figures over the years. You've got a remarkable vocabulary and exceptional math skills. Note: The IQ score is free but you have to pay for complete results which analyse your strengths and weaknesses.
http://www.intelligencetest.com/ - You have fifteen minutes to answer thirty questions. I scored 135.
http://www.testcafe.com/iqtest/ - Congratulations! Your general IQ score is 157. A person whose IQ score falls in the range of 144-160 is considered to be 'gifted'.
http://www.psychtests.com/tests/iq/index.html - Classical Intelligence Test - Revised - 60 questions, 45-60 min. I did the test in 20 minutes and scored 127 (So there is probably no advantage in answering faster and I should have taken more time and care!)
I have not completed the following IQ Tests but the websites seem to be pretty good.

http://www.audiblox2000.com/dyslexia_dyslexic/dyslexia014.htm - An interesting article on the history of IQ Tests: Where Does It Come From and What Does It Measure? BY JAN STRYDOM, M.A., H.E.D., D.Ed. & SUSAN DU PLESSIS, B.D., B.A. Hons (Psychology) - The most important criterion in diagnosing a child as learning disabled is the IQ test. The aim of an IQ test is to measure the intelligence of a child, which supposedly is an indication of the child's potential. But where does the test come from and does it really measure potential?
My two children will do these tests over the next few months and give us their results and opinions! I am having trouble finding many FREE online IQ Tests for children so if anyone knows of any please write to me and I will add them. Thanks
http://www.athey-educational.co.uk/noaccess/mult1x.htm - 'This verbal reasoning test is suitable for nine to twelve year old children and a challenge for kids parents! There are 25 questions and the time limit is 13 minutes. When you have finished the test click the 'What's My Score' button. You are also given the correct answers for the questions you got wrong.'
http://www.kids-iq-tests.com/ - Children's Online IQ Tests - from ages 3 to 15. (They cost about $10 each.)
Oddly,
things have now reached such a state that even among men of intelligence philosophy
means something fantastical and vain, without value or usefulness, both in
opinion and practice. The cause lies in chop-logic which has captured all the
approaches. It is a great mistake to portray Philosophy with a haughty, frowning,
terrifying face, or as inaccessible to the young. Whoever clapped that wan
and frightening mask to her face! There is nothing more lovely, more happy
and gay - I almost said more amorously playful. What she preaches is all feast
and fun. A sad and gloomy mien shows you have mistaken her address. (de
Montaigne)
