Philosophical Movies / Film Documentaries on Truth and Reality

Hi Everyone,

I have put up this page because I have collected some ideas over the past several years that I think would make nice films or documentaries.
Truth and reality have been largely neglected in film / art - so there is great potential I think - and very important given current knowledge foundations (ignorance / religious myth) and dire state of our world as a consequence (overpopulation, pollution, destruction of Nature - causing change in earth's atmosphere and climate, ability to support life).

I have just purchased the latest film quality digital video camera.
Sony XDCAM EX series solid-state camcorder: PMW-EX1

These ideas are copyright - so please write to us if you are interested in working with us. The purpose of this page is to encourage other creative artistic people to get involved and work together to make something profound and unique in the history of documentary film.

Sincerely,
Geoff Haselhurst - Email

1. Documentary on the Wave Structure of Matter

An explanation of the central problems of physics, philosophy and metaphysics founded on the Wave Structure of Matter in Space. The central principle is that we can deduce the most simple science theory of reality, the wave structure of matter in Space, then deduce from this to show that it works. Basically postmodern philosophy of science is telling us that science does not work. However, the truth is that science does not work if it is founded on many things (motion of matter particles in space and time) rather than founding it on the one thing all matter exists in Space, where matter is formed from spherical wave motions of space.

Obviously we will need someone to create numerous wave diagrams to go with explanations.
But most of it is simple to explain because the underlying reality of waves in Space is simple. I would hope to make this in a series of short (2 to 3 minute) modules on the various things that can be explained, such that they can also be used on relevant pages of this website.

2. What is Truth and Reality?

Documentary that interviews a variety of people asking them "What is truth and reality" (the replies will be funny, but also disturbing!). Interview 'normal' everyday people along with 'expert' scientists / philosophers (and a few famous faces would also help obviously).
The aim is to show that most people have absolutely no idea about truth and reality, including most scientists (who should know better). And it is this fact (our general ignorance) that is allowing (causing?) our planet to be destroyed. This is the problem of democracy - truth and reality are not democratic!
I would be one of the people interviewed - hopefully to contrast the nonsense that most people imagine as truth compared with a simple explanation founded on the wave structure of matter in space (that we all experience existing in).

3. The Last Days of Socrates

Based on the dialogues of Plato (one of the most beautifully elegant philosophers) which are both amusing and profound. The central point is that a democracy condemned Socrates to death because they did not like being told that they were ignorant of the truth about things (Socrates did not claim to know the truth - only that others who did were mistaken).
The story is profoundly sad, and completely relevant to our current times.
A few of my favourite Plato quotes from 'Republic'.;

And those whose hearts are fixed on Reality itself deserve the title of Philosophers.

The society we have described can never grow into a reality or see the light of day, and there will be no end to the troubles of states, or indeed, my dear Glaucon, of humanity itself, till philosophers are kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands, while the many natures now content to follow either to the exclusion of the other are forcibly debarred from doing so. This is what I have hesitated to say so long, knowing what a paradox it would sound; for it is not easy to see that there is no other road to happiness, either for society or the individual.

When the mind's eye rests on objects illuminated by truth and reality, it understands and comprehends them, and functions intelligently; but when it turns to the twilight world of change and decay, it can only form opinions, its vision is confused and its beliefs shifting, and it seems to lack intelligence.

I don't know anything that gives me greater pleasure, or profit either, than talking or listening to philosophy. But when it comes to ordinary conversation, such as the stuff you talk about financiers and the money market, well, I find it pretty tiresome personally, and I feel sorry that my friends should think they're being very busy when they're really doing absolutely nothing. Of course, I know your idea of me: you think I'm just a poor unfortunate, and I shouldn't wonder if your right. But then I don't THINK that you're unfortunate - I know you are. (Geoff - This quote always makes me laugh!)

'That is the story. Do you think there is any way of making them believe it?'
' Not in the first generation', he said, 'but you might succeed with the second and later generations.'

The philosopher is in love with truth, that is, not with the changing world of sensation, which is the object of opinion, but with the unchanging reality which is the object of knowledge.

'But surely "blind" is just how you would describe men who have no true knowledge of reality, and no clear standard in their mind to refer to, as a painter refers to his model, and which they can study closely before they start laying down rules about what is fair or right or good where they are needed, or maintaining, as Guardians, any rules that already exist.'
'Yes, blind is just about what they are'

And once we have given our community a good start, the process will be cumulative. By maintaining a sound system of education you produce citizens of good character, and citizens of sound character, with the advantage of a good education, produce in turn children better than themselves and better able to produce still better children in their turn, as can be seen with animals. (Plato, Republic, 380BC)

These quotes show how astute Plato was, as he is effectively discussing memes, i.e. the evolution of cultural knowledge and that it must be founded on the truth. And when you consider the state of our world now, 2,500 years after Plato, well it confirms the truth of what he wrote - that a society founded on myths / customs is doomed.
Plato was fantastic - one of my favourite philosophers (though I love them all!)

4. Virtual Dinner with Philosophers

A dinner / conversation with the great philosophers of the past.
To include;
Heraclitus, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Galileo, Descartes, Leibniz, Newton, Spinoza, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Einstein.

The main character would be a philosopher / inventor who uses the internet and holographic images to 'bring alive' these great minds. He then discusses their ideas over dinner and slowly works out from them what reality must be. (I think this is a nice use of computer animation - but obviously expensive to do well). And it is pretty easy to use their quotes to construct dialogue, and then show how it all fits together nicely once you get rid of the 'particle' conception of matter in space-time and replace it with the wave motion of Space.

5. A Day in the Life of a Philosopher

I am very fortunate to live on a gorgeous property of 650 acres on the coast of Western Australia. It is a beautiful place to film - and we have recently created a lovely space that has several ponds, a lawn, organic vegetable garden and orchard - all surrounded by Nature.
So I planned on making a documentary that looks at how we can live in harmony with Nature. Some themes:
Well I spend a lot of time pulling out weeds - so there is an important analogy with 'weed' ideas. i.e. It is the duty of philosophy to remove weed ideas and replace them with true ideas (planting seeds of truth).

Just as fallow lands, when rich and fertile, are seen to abound in hundreds and thousands of different kinds of useless weeds so that, if we would make them do their duty, we must subdue them and keep them busy with seeds specifically sown for our service; so too with our minds. If we do not keep them busy with some particular subject which can serve as a bridle to reign them in, they charge ungovernably about, ranging to and fro over the wastelands of our thoughts. (Michel de Montaigne, Essays, p30)

And the surface of the water provides an excellent medium for showing how waves behave.
Basically to explain how this natural world (that all exists in Space) is connected together by the wave structure of matter.

6. Latest News (2020, 2030, 2040, 2050)

I am planning on filming this myself - my partner Karene would be the news reader.

Basically it would be a series of short news bulletins dated from 2020 to 2050 - but from a dystopian and utopian view.

Dystopia - In one set of news broadcasts we would assume that the world carries on in its current direction. The news would be horrific and show how things deteriorate over the next 50 years - ending with most humans dead, and human civilization reduced to ruin through collapse of Nature, illness from pollution, GM foods, increasing terrorism and social chaos, massive increases in wind strength of storms that effectively destroys all airlines, shipping, housing, cities, trees flattened, ... (this is actually happening - average energy of cyclones has nearly doubled in past 30 years - it only needs to double again to destroy most human structures / machines).
We are building a substantial environmental section over next 12 months - so I will have lots of knowledge to report!

Utopia - These news broadcasts assume that reality was worked out and became widely known and accepted as true by 2012. The news would slowly show how this true knowledge of reality led to a new renaissance for humanity - where for the first time their societies where built from true foundations (rather than customs / religious myths). World population was controlled and stabilized at around 1 billion people, 75% of agriculture was converted back to Nature. Cities became smaller and large areas of concrete / bitumen were converted back to Nature (making cities beautiful again).
Noisy polluting machines were replaced with clean energy and (to a certain extent) human labor (we do need to exercise to be healthy!)

There is lots to add here - but it is pretty easy to imagine a world much better than ours! Sadly, this is possible but unlikely given the generally emotional / religious beliefs of the masses, combined with a 'democracy' that is founded on profit / self interest rather than wisdom from truth and reality.

7. Albert Einstein "Ideas and Opinions"

I would love to make a documentary on Albert Einstein that actually presented and discussed his ideas honestly and in detail. His book "Ideas and Opinions" is one of the greatest books ever written in my opinion (I have quoted large amounts of it, he was very astute, and highly moral).
So I will write to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (he left his estate to them) and see what is involved in getting access to his papers, images and old archival film.
We have some very good pages on Albert Einstein.

8. Documentary: New Physics Foundations / 21st Century Physics

I am very fortunate to work with a nice intelligent group of physics people - and we are planning on having a meeting / conference some time in the next 12 months. So it would be a good chance to interview each of these scientist / philosophers.
I would interview each of them. Ask questions on;
How did you come to the idea that matter was made of waves?
Why do you think this is true?
What do you think of current physics (standard model of particle physics, big bang theory, Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics). etc. ...

It would be easy to make a documentary on this, and these people are smart and nice - they would come across well I think.

-------------------

There is obviously much more detail required, and over time i will write some sample scenes / dialogue. But this is a start - gives people some ideas that may lead to something creative / useful!
I hope to have finished re-writing website by the end of 2009. So then I plan on working full time in this area of film / documentary.

Help Humanity

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
(Mohandas Gandhi)

Albert Einstein"When forced to summarize the general theory of relativity in one sentence: Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter. ... Physical objects are not in space, but these objects are spatially extended. In this way the concept 'empty space' loses its meaning. ... The particle can only appear as a limited region in space in which the field strength or the energy density are particularly high. ...
The free, unhampered exchange of ideas and scientific conclusions is necessary for the sound development of science, as it is in all spheres of cultural life. ... We must not conceal from ourselves that no improvement in the present depressing situation is possible without a severe struggle; for the handful of those who are really determined to do something is minute in comparison with the mass of the lukewarm and the misguided. ...
Humanity is going to need a substantially new way of thinking if it is to survive!" (Albert Einstein)

Biography: Geoffrey Haselhurst, Philosopher of Science, Theoretical Physics, Metaphysics, Evolution. Our world is in great trouble due to human behaviour founded on myths and customs that are causing the destruction of Nature and climate change. We can now deduce the most simple science theory of reality - the wave structure of matter in space. By understanding how we and everything around us are interconnected in Space we can then deduce solutions to the fundamental problems of human knowledge in physics, philosophy, metaphysics, theology, education, health, evolution and ecology, politics and society.

This is the profound new way of thinking that Einstein realised, that we exist as spatially extended structures of the universe - the discrete and separate body an illusion. This simply confirms the intuitions of the ancient philosophers and mystics.

Given the current censorship in physics / philosophy of science journals (based on the standard model of particle physics / big bang cosmology) the internet is the best hope for getting new knowledge known to the world. But that depends on you, the people who care about science and society, realise the importance of truth and reality.

Thanks! Geoff Haselhurst (Updated September, 2018)

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it. (Max Planck, 1920)
